In this, the final section of The Palette, we explore the emigration of our ancestors to the New World by the countries from which they came. These include England, France, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland and Wales. An exact accounting is impossible. Given the turmoil of the times many families fled the country in which they might have been born and lived the majority of their lives seeking refuge in another country only to flee again across the Atlantic in hope of finding a homeland in which they could prosper. So,for instance, a family from France or Switzerland might have sought safety in Germany prior to coming to the colonies and be listed as an emigre from Germany rather than their native land. The information that follows shows clearly how movement from the different coutries occured in their own unique waves that reflect the underlying reasons that our ancestors sought new homes in colonial America.
