David Armentrout's Maternal Line
Progenitor: Edith Kissell
Summary:
In the Kissell line 71 individuals made their way to the Americas on 33 different voyages. All of the Dutch influence in our family comes through this line with 25% of the line coming from the Nederlands. Others came from Germany(28%), England (18%), Ireland (13%), Scotland (10%), and France (6%). Their destinations differed as much as their emigration origins from the other family lines. The high percentage of German families is reflected in the 35% who chose Pennsylvania as their new home. The highest concentration from any of our family lines choosing New York (27%) reflects the strong influx of families from the Netherlands settling in New Amsterdam which was renamed New York when taken over by the English. Other destinations included Maryland (17%), Virginia (11%), Massachusetts (6%) and New Jersey (4%).
It is again interesting to see that the new arrivals came in waves determined by their nation of origin. The earliest arrivers came in the early 17th century from England and were followed about forty years later by the Dutch and French. Next came the Irish around 1720 and the Germans twenty years later around 1740 to 1750. The Scots closed the door on immigration in this line coming in the late 1700s into the early 1800s.
